Crew

Captain: Benjamin Pickersgill

Ben grew up in the Solent area of the UK where he cut his teeth racing from an early age. He graduated from Falmouth University and was awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Things changed however when a chance encounter with former Sunsail boss Chris Gordon culminated in being offered a job in Phuket with Chris Craft Asia- Ben hasn’t looked back since. It was during his time in Thailand that his love for spicy food developed a fascination in Asian cuisine, one that he continues in his work afloat.

Ben and Oyster yachts go back a number of years. He assisted in the refit of Oyster 100 “Penelope” in Southampton, was a member of her foredeck team during the Oyster 2014 Regatta and delivered the boat to Falmouth Harbour, Antigua for the winter season. His work on the water did not go under the superyacht radar and he also has two seasons on a 60 metre Perini Navi ketch under his belt as bosun and chase boat driver.

He also has broad racing background on a wide variety of yachts. From 100 year old classic yachts in the UK to being part of the shore team for Alex Thompson during his Vendee Globe campaign in 2015/16.

Since they met in Greece in 2016, Ben and Laura have worked and sailed together throughout the North Ionian despite a brief hiatus in Antigua. Most recently they have completed a very busy charter season in Corfu and are now relishing a new challenge on Boarding Pass.

Laura started dinghy sailing at the age of 6 on the Aberdyfi estuary in North wales. Starting in Toppers before graduating up to Lasers and mopping the floor with the local competition.

It was her greatest passion through her formative years as well as a love of the sea and the outdoors.

In July 2014, Laura achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Science and Outdoor Activities at Bangor University. Following this Laura hit the jackpot and was sponsored to do her Yachtmaster Offshore with Commercial Endorsement and Cruising Instructors. Since passing her Yachtmasters Laura has never looked back. In February 2015 Laura fulfilled a further ambition by undertaking the delivery of a Shipman 63’ on an Atlantic crossing from Gibraltar to Antigua via Tenerife.

Laura has previously worked for Sunsail and The Moorings in The British Virgin Islands and Greece Ionian as a bareboat skipper, flotilla skipper and cruising instructor, for three seasons. Prior to working for Sunsail, she spent 4 weeks freelancing for Malta Sailing Academy instructing Day Skipper and Competent Crew courses.

This past season Laura has worked with Ben running a Jeanneau 57 out of Corfu doing back to back charters. Laura also has a real passion for cooking, learning to cook with her parents using their homemade pizza oven and BBQ area. Laura also did a cookery course at Ashburton cookery school where she learnt lots of new skill that have served her well in her busy summer season.

Laura is passionate about being on the water and all aspects of sailing, watersports, travel and cooking. She enjoys meeting new people and infusing them with her enthusiasm for sailing. Working on an Oyster Yacht is a job that Laura has dreamt of since a very young age and she is very excited about the opportunities and challenges ahead.
